Pemba Channel
The Pemba Channel is widely known, not only as the best place to fish in Kenya but probably the best place in the whole of Africa. Located on the east coast of Africa south of Kenya's famous Hemingways Resort, the Pemba Channel is a 35-mile stretch of blue water that separates the island of Pemba from the mainland. Within the translucent waters of this channel, which reaches depths of 2,700 feet, swim three varieties of marlin, sailfish, spearfish, swordfish, yellowfin tuna and virtually every blue-water game fish anglers pursue - including large mako and tiger sharks.
With the presence of plenty of baitfish combined with clear, deep water, the channel acts a reference point for migrating billfish and other pelagics, which follow the current and channel during their seasonal movements.
With an eight-month fishing season (from August to the end of March), Pemba offers good shots at billfish nearly year-round. While other areas of the coast are susceptible to the southeast wind that can blow through during the monsoon seasons, Pemba for the most part enjoys good weather and pleasant seas. When fishing the Pemba Channel, you are in the lee of Pemba Island, safe from the high winds that would gather strength coming across the open Indian Ocean.
